Driving in North Macedonia (Severna Makedonija)

Passenger cars must carry: spare wheel, warning triangle, first aid kit, tow rope or bar, reflective safety vest, winter equipment; seat belts and head restraints. A 2 kg ABC fire extinguisher is required for LPG/CNG vehicles, buses and commercial vehicles. Winter equipment: winter tyres with at least 4 mm tread on all wheels, or summer tyres with at least 4 mm tread plus snow chains for the drive wheels; 4x4 winter tyres need at least 6 mm.

No vignette. Tolls are paid at toll stations on the motorways (cash at the booth; electronic card or tag options exist). AMSM lists station fees on routes from Skopje, for example Gevgelija 100 MKD, Veles 80 MKD, Demir Kapija 80 MKD, Gradsko 60 MKD, Tetovo 30 MKD.

Built-up areas 50 km/h; motorways 130 km/h; roads reserved for motor vehicles 110 km/h; other roads outside built-up areas 90 km/h (or lower if signposted). Vehicles that cannot reach 60 km/h may not use motorways or expressways. Phone use only hands-free. Alcohol impairment threshold 0.50 g/kg; novice and professional drivers 0.09 g/kg.

A valid green card is required for foreign cars and the MK mark must not be crossed out. Slovenian and Hungarian plates count as proof of insurance; Kosovo "Kosovo plus" policies are accepted. If proof is invalid, border insurance must be bought at the crossing. Foreigners must register at the nearest police station within 24 hours of entry.
